michaelle jean, governor general of canada, publically urges the federal government to build a university in the north west territories so that inuit youth can further their education closer to home.

premier floyd roland joined a canadian delegation to the arctic council in tromso, norway last month where the idea of a northern university may have been planted and considered.

“When you look at those countries (on the Arctic Council), their universities are heavily involved in this process,” Roland told The Journal. “I met with an individual for a discussion of the University of the Arctic, and it came up how we in the NWT can be involved. (A Northern university) is something I think needs to be discussed.”

nwt has a population of almost 42,000 people. according to the 2001 canadian census, 36% of the population is first nations and 11.2% are inuit.

gary cronkwright bursary

i used to work for an organisation that represented the 24 ontario colleges in a corporate training capacity. the ceo is retiring, and the organisation has started a bursary in his name, one that i think is incredibly awesome and worthy of spreading the news:

CON*NECT is pleased to pleased to announce the creation of the Gary Cronkwright Bursary. This bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated financial need to a college student enrolled in the Skilled Trades program. Preference will be granted to applicants with superior academic ability and who are leaders in their community. We hope to help students who face financial barriers to post-secondary education move forward, in honour of the excellent work Gary has done on behalf of CON*NECT and the college system.

If you would like to donate to the fund, in celebration of Gary’s 40+ years spent in the Ontario college system, please makes cheques payable to CON*NECT Strategic Alliances, clearly indicating the payment is for G. Cronkwright Bursary. Donations can be sent to:
