andragogy vs pedagogy

as i was poking around the about.com continuing education forum, i saw the word “andragogy”, and was surprised to admit to myself that this is a new word to me.

i’ve been well aware of the word pedagogy, the art and science of teaching children, from the greek word meaning child-leading. however, in doing some research, i see that andragogy is from the greek word for adult-leading, and is the art and science of teaching adults, but also refers to a learner-focussed education.

the difference seems to lie in the intellectual ability of the student. eduard lindeman and martha anderson developed the concepts of andragogy, but it was malcolm knowles, scholar, academic administrator, and author, who breathed new popularity into the word as “the process of engaging adult learners in the structure of the learning experience”, and is contemplated as:

  1. Self-concept: As a person matures his self concept moves from one of being a dependent personality toward one of being a self-directed human being
  2. Experience: As a person matures he accumulates a growing reservoir of experience that becomes an increasing resource for learning.
  3. Readiness to learn. As a person matures his readiness to learn becomes oriented increasingly to the developmental tasks of his social roles.
  4. Orientation to learning. As a person matures his time perspective changes from one of postponed application of knowledge to immediacy of application, and accordingly his orientation toward learning shifts from one of subject-centeredness to one of problem centredness.
  5. Motivation to learn: As a person matures the motivation to learn is internal

knowles himself later concluded that age is no longer the determining factor for distinguishing between the use of andragogy and pedagogy, but rather it has transformed into andragogy being the term for self-directed learning, and pedagogy for teacher-directed learning.

however, progressive education theorists denounce the use of the word andragogy on the basis that it adds confusion since its main expressions are not specific to adults.

a very important canadian conference will be taking place may 27-30 in belleville, on. it is the 19th annual pla conference – breaking the barriers to success for adult learners: principles, policies, and practices.

This year’s theme acknowledges that while much progress has been made to improve services to adult learners there is much more to be done. In Canada we are still far away from an integrated approach to adult learning policy and practice that, if implemented could address a diversity of issues. Unfortunately there are many subtle and not-so-subtle impediments to success for adult learners – institutional barriers, fragmented and disconnected services and diverse funding mechanisms that vary from province to province, many of them ill suited to the needs and life circumstances of adult learners.

based on the key recommendations from recently released final report (pdf) from adult learner friendly institutions canada (alfican), this conference aims to explore a implementation strategy, confirming best practivce principles .
