sxsw is a highly recommended convergence of interactive, film, and music festivals and conferences that run independently but concurrently in austin, tx.

sxsw interactive is 5days of panels, discussions, parties, and networking to gather together brilliant minds and emerging technology.

Whether you are a hard-core geek, a dedicated content creator, a new media entrepreneur, or just someone who likes being around an extremely creative community, SXSW Interactive is for you!

since they have received so many panel submissions but space and time is limited, they have established a panel picker to let the public assist the decison makers in choosing the panels at the 2009 sxsw interactive.

and look!  there are plenty of education related panels to vote for. some are:

general education:

knowledge sharing:

pirates are moving west!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on August 17, 2008 by ruyoung

rumour has is it that the pirates are moving into the bloor lansdowne neighbourhood. for my intercity and international readers, this really means nothing, but for those who live in toronto, it means knowledge transfer for a particular segment of lifestyle learning is moving westward. for those who don’t mind getting their hands drty, this means accessible bike repair.

bike pirates, formerly located on bathurst between college and dundas, is moving into an empty store on bloor w just east of lansdowne. it’s not a regular bike shop, instead their tools are available for anyone to use to fix their own bikes and staff are on hand to teach cylcists how to fix their bikes. empowering the cyclist with maintenance and repair knowledge puts them far beyond a simple self serve depot. it is a volunteer run non-profit organisation.

lifestyle learning, be it for fixing bikes, editing personal videos, baking, or home decorating, is life-long, life-wide learning.  why bring your bike to a bike shop and not learn how to take care of your own bike if there is a facility to teach you how to do it through essential project-based learning? it feels good to walk ride away with a sense of accomplishment.

i’m preparing to staff a booth at natcon, the national career development and workforce learning event at the doubletree intl hotel in toronto.

some of the highlights i hope to catch are:

  • the training response to business issues – how smes rise to the challenge: a global perspective
  • neighbourhood intervention through community collaboration
  • get smart using the workplace informal learning matrix to recognize learning
  • overcoming barriers to work-related learning: effective, innovative, and promising canadian practices and programs
  • learning online: flexible professional development for busy career and hr management specialists
  • building successful community business education partnerships

and one of the most interesting sessions that i’m hoping to attend:

  • getting serious with elearning: move from page-turners to serious gaming and web 2.0 tools to increase productivity, performance, and knowledge transfer

hopefully i’ll be able to attend a number of these and report back here on the ones i can get to.
