canada moodle moot 2008 canceled

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on August 1, 2008 by ruyoung

sadly, the upcoming canada moodle moot 2008 has been canceled. a message from one of the organisers:

We are sadly writing to let you know that, despite our best efforts, we are not able to provide an online Canada Moot as planned, nor will York University be offering an onsite Moodle conference during the August 20 – 23, 2008 dates as previously announced.

Canada Moot is cancelling this year’s Moot hosted by York University, as there were not sufficient registrations to support a Moodle Moot.  York plans to offer a more faculty-focused Moodle training event, however not during the August 20 – 23 dates.

We will be issuing full refunds of your registration fee this weekend.  We sincerely apologize for any disruption these changes cause you.  The Knowplace group will be refocusing our efforts on planning the next Canada Moot, most likely hosted by a western-based university again.  We will be pleased to offer presenters and delegates from this year’s event an additional discount.  Watch for more news from us later.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, or the folks at York.  Again, our sincere apologies for any disruption these changes have caused you.

edtech weekly

i had heard about edtech weekly for a while now, but was finally able to check it out tonight.

edtech weekly episode 64 was a great casual yet informative live webcast of 4folks from various places in usa and canada. it was a quick 45mins of sharing links and brief stories of news, tools, and tips related to education. the audience can listen in using a live stream on common media players or streal live from their website, and are free to join in the conversation using a chat feature.

two gems in the list of links shared tonight are:

flypaper – bridges the gap between powerpoint and flash

myicourse – software and hosting to post your own educational materials (like moodle, for example)

from this one episode and past shows listed on their website it really does seem to be focussed on k-12 or a bit of college, but not much for adult learning which is my focus, so i’ll not likely be a regular listener, but i know i’ll check back in a few times because it is a valuable source of information.

the webcast is always on sun evening, but today was at a different time than normal. usually the webcast starts at 7:00pm est. see their calendar for more information.

wiziq announces live class module for moodle

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on February 2, 2008 by ruyoung

earlier this week wiziq announced their live class module for moodle, which will have a profound impact on distance learning.

wiziq is virtual classroom technology which can be used by both edcuators and students, and contains a content library, test section, teacher profiles, and free public sessions by experts.

in a press release issused by authorgen technologies on the announcemnt of the new partnership, the noted common benefits of wiziq and moodel are:

  • wiziq and moodle platforms are both free-to-use and user-friendly
  • both are fully compatible with windows, mac os, and linux
  • both work well with multiple browsers as internet explorer, netscape, firefox, mozilla, opera, and safari
  • both programs are web-based with no installations required from teachers and students

and while virtual classrooms are not new, they have not always been free. this is really going to impact web conferencing systems that have enjoyed their share of the market to date, since both moodle and wiziq are free. harman singh, the ceo of authorgen technologies who has ushered in this partnership announcement said, “easy-to-use tools for teachers with no learning curve, installation and download free and yet effective, makes wiziq a unique e-learning platform.”

cost plus availability can be a hinderance for learning from afar. it is technology opportunities like this that can really make a difference for students and teachers of distance learning.

i just downloaded moodle, a free and open source software package, so that i can play around with developing my own online courses.

though i know what content i want to put in it, i really have no idea what i’m doing, so this will be quite a challenge. i’ll post updates when i make important discoveries or great accomplishments.
